The Arizona Senate voted on Tuesday, February 15 to ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, joining several states to do so.
Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger commented, "The right to life is the foundation of all human rights. Accordingly, I am pleased that the Arizona Senate has now passed a 15-week abortion ban and hope that the Arizona House will do so as well."
He continued, "It is almost universally recognized that women seeking abortions do so because of stressful circumstances, financial pressure, and relationship discord. This is a tragedy and it is why the Church also advocates for solutions to these problems other than killing pre-born children through abortion.”
The Associated Press provides more information in this news coverage: "The state has an obligation to protect life, and that is what this bill is about,” Sen. Nancy Barto said during debate. “A 15-week-old baby in the womb has a fully formed nose, lips, eyelids, they suck their thumbs. They feel pain. That’s what this bill is about.”
