The widely known Filipino traditional Christmas novena Masses begin on December 16 to the 24th at 5:30 in the morning at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Tucson.
Begun by Fr. Miguel Mariano when he was pastor at St. Joseph Parish over 15 years ago, this tradition has moved to Ss. Peter and Paul Parish located along Campbell St. between Speedway Boulevard and Grant Road. Largely held every Christmas in the Philippines, this has followed Filipino communities all over the world bringing much celebration in anticipation to the birth of our Lord.
Usually celebrated at 4am in the Philippines, this allows fishermen coming in from a night of fishing to attend the Christmas novena as well as farmers heading out to the fields early enough to avoid the searing heat of the tropical sun. While it is commonly known as “Simbang Gabi”, translated as “Mass of the evening”, another term for it is “Misa de Gallo” (Mass of the Rooster).
Those attending are encouraged to bring something to share in a simple breakfast at Gramer Hall following the Mass.
