The Mescal fire is burning about 12 miles southeast of Globe. It started June 2nd. Since the fire has started, the surrounding communities have been on alert. It’s not clear what started the fire.
Globe’s rectory took this image of the Mescal fire nearby.
Fr. George Madhu took this image of the fire the night of June 6th.
Meanwhile the Telegraph fire is burning about a mile from the Top-of-the-World. It started June 4th. The fire is believed to be human caused.
Bishop Edward J Weseinburger sent out a call for prayer for these communities:
“I am carefully watching the news about wildfires in our area and have communicated just now with the Pastors in Globe, Miami, Superior, and San Carlos. While no one is in immediate danger the situation is very troubling and could develop quickly. I kindly ask that you keep these communities and their pastors in your prayers.
Our parish in Miami is in the south part of the town, which is considered more secure. At this time the Miami side of Globe is on the "Set" mode and Fr. Miranda can see the orange glow of the fires from his front porch. State Routes 60, 70, and 177 are all closed. The town of San Carlos is technically closed due to smoke and is actually facing a separate wildfire.
Again Fathers, I send this message not to alarm anyone as I believe our parishes are not in immediate threat of danger, but the situation is very concerning. I kindly ask your prayers for our parishes and clergy.
May God bless you abundantly, and keep you all safe,
+Edward J. Weisenburger”
