I have been blessed to work for the Diocese of Tucson for more than 40 years. During my tenure I have been fortunate to work with many outstanding and talented individuals. My experience collaborating with Bishop Gerald Kicanas elevated me to become a more confident and responsible person. I learned to appreciate and understand all that our Catholic Church does for human suffering across the world. I honestly believe that our society does not give our Catholic church the credit it deserves.
Bishop Kicanas served as our bishop for 15 years. He came in during an exceedingly tough time for the Diocese of Tucson. The Diocese was facing extreme financial challenges. He was successful in bringing financial stability, and he become the beloved Bishop among his flock. When Bishop Kicanas announced his retirement, we felt that the new bishop could never measure up.
Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger came to the Diocese of Tucson in 2017. While the popular feeling among members of the Diocese was a “wait and see” mixed with the warm welcome, the bottom line was that he had some big shoes to fill. Before the year ended, he had met and exceeded expectations. Bishop Weisenburger’s transition from the mid-west to the Sonoran Desert quickly turned into love and respect for the beauty of Tucson’s history, culture and climate and especially for the people. His demeanor, confidence, and love for his vocation was evident among his employees and his community. You would always see him with a big smile that was contagious. He brought his belief in strong community and faith to Southern Arizona. Had the next pair of shoes to fill become hiking boots?
Bishop Weisenburger successfully completed seven years as Bishop of the Diocese of Tucson. His innovative leadership and guidance have created a formidable reputation within the Southern Arizona Community. He touched so many of us in an incredibly unique way. A true shepherd to his flock. I am sure he is destined for greater things. He has earned our friendship and respect forever. The Catholic community of the Diocese of Tucson is saddened to lose him as our bishop, but we are proud to see he is getting the recognition he deserves.
The Catholic community of Detroit is blessed to have Archbishop Edward Weisenburger as its new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He will continue to bring stability and growth to their community. His passion and love will continue to inspire the teaching of our faith. We wish you the best Archbishop Weisenburger and hope you know how much you are loved and respected. It was an honor for me to witness and be included in your installation ceremony in Detroit.
As the Diocese awaits its new Bishop, we now have the blessing of Gerald Kicanas, Bishop Emeritus as our Apostolic Administrator, which is a bishop or priest who is appointed by the pope to administer a vacant diocese until a new ordinary is installed. Dust off those shoes and welcome back!
