This week commemorates a special day for the Diocese of Tucson. It was on November 29, 2017, that Bishop Edward Weisenburger was installed as our seventh bishop. He was ordained to the priesthood in December of 1987.
Bishop Weisenburger came to Tucson from the Catholic Diocese of Salina in Kansas. Bishop Weisenburger replaced Bishop Gerald Kicanas, who retired after serving the diocese for 14 years.
Earlier this week, Bishop Weisenburger reflected on his time in the Diocese of Tucson, "Upon arriving, I discovered a vibrant church with a people deeply devoted to Jesus. Bishop Kicanas was an immense help in every way. The clergy, our priests and deacons, have been great, and the lay leadership I’ve worked with have proven wonderfully generous in their service. I’m also truly grateful for the wonderful people who work at the Chancery and serve our parishes. I’m privileged to be with people who love the Church."
The last six years have been busy for Bishop Weisenburger as he has visited all 78 parishes in the nine counties of our diocese which spans more than 46,000 square miles. Bishop Weisenburger especially enjoys visiting our 22 Catholic schools and talking with students about their faith.
Bishop Weisenburger said the last six years have gone by quickly, "As bishops usually retire at 75, I’m looking forward to the next 12-13 years in our beloved Diocese, and beyond that in retirement. God is good and I’m overwhelmed with gratitude at the blessings He has shown me."
