Statement of Most Reverend Edward J. Weisenburger Roman Catholic Bishop of Tucson
"On behalf of the clergy and people of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, I fully endorse the statement decrying anti-Semitism and racism signed by religious leaders of the Tucson community. It is a fundamental teaching of Catholicism that the image of God rests upon every human being. For this reason we must show reverence and respect for all of our brothers and sisters.
Recent criminal acts of hostility or vandalism perpetrated against Jewish religious sites in Tucson are deeply distressing and must stop. As noted in the above-referenced statement, it is not enough for us merely to condemn these acts of violence and hatred. We must replace the hostility and aggression with understanding and renewed unity. The true solution to such evil in the world is for each of us to commit ourselves to building bridges of respect and acceptance. It is these personal and communal relationships that will make our world a far more safe and loving place. "
