I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to Fr. Sean Carroll, S.J., the new Provincial for Jesuits West Province. For many years Fr. Carroll has led the Kino Border Initiative (KBI) on the Nogales border, one of Arizona’s most critical ministries. Under his capable leadership the Kino Border Initiative has expanded to serve tens of thousands of immigrants, many in the most critical of circumstances. Fr. Carroll will leave KBI at the end of March and begin his new ministry as Provincial on July 31st.
Fr. Carroll’s exceptionally capable leadership witnessed at KBI will no doubt be repeated in his service to his brother Jesuits. In the Diocese of Tucson the Jesuit Order staffs not only the KBI but also the Vatican Observatory located on Mt. Graham. The Jesuit Order’s long tradition of staffing critical ministries as well as educational institutions of higher learning remains a great blessing for the Church. Father Carroll’s ministry will be greatly missed in our Diocese but I congratulate the Jesuit Order for recognizing Fr. Carroll’s talents and calling him into leadership for the Order.
