The photo of the then Fr Edward Daly waving his handkerchief as a white flag, in an attempt to escort one of the victims to safety, has become one of the most iconic images of the Troubles.
Dr. Daly was a 39-year-old curate at St Eugene's Cathedral in Derry (Londonderry) on the day 13 Catholics were killed by British soldiers. A 14th person was to die later of his wounds.
In 2010, the Saville judicial inquiry found that the victims on the day were innocent and had posed no threat to the military.
As the families and friends of the victims commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, on 30 January, we bring you this archive interview with the late Bishop.
Recorded following the publication of the Saville Report on the 16 June 2010, Bishop Daly spoke to Lydia O’Kane about the relief he felt at the exoneration of those who lost their lives. He also described living through what he called the worst day of his life.
