Earlier this month, CatholicU Tucson shone brightly for many reasons. The first was the visit from the Washington, DC Main Campus leadership. The Southwest extension was visited by President Peter Kilpatrick, Provost Aaron Dominguez, and Dean Vincent Kiernan! They had a wonderful visit with local leaders and students.
Another one of the reasons Tucson shone was the blessing of the sign above the Student Success Center, located at the Pima Community College - Downtown Campus. Students in the Tucson program belong to a welcoming and supportive family of teachers and learners faithfully committed to their success and their journey to thrive - and it starts within those walls. In these spaces, students explore, collaborate, create and learn by doing.
Bishop Emeritus Gerald Kicanas prayed that within these walls, in their lessons and throughout their lives, students know the love of Christ and the truth of the Gospel. He reminded all present that this sign informs us that this is where The Catholic University of America is located in Tucson. But it symbolizes more. It symbolizes the goal to build courage and gain confidence to unlock student potential and encourage them to become more than they ever thought possible. It symbolizes the dedication to ensure that graduates are ready to stand out and make a difference in Tucson and beyond. It symbolizes a dedicated faculty and staff who are with these students on their journey to thrive in work and in life. It symbolizes our commitment to build a place of faith and learning.
Bishop dedicated this sign to the education and well-being of the present and future students of The Catholic University of America in Tucson, and to their growth in faith, hope and love. He prayed that it may be a place where students and teachers will search for the wisdom that guides the Christian life and strive wholeheartedly to stand by Christ as their teacher.
On the sign itself, The Catholic University shield, also known as the coat of arms, features a quarterly cross over an open book, its pages inscribed “Deus Lux Mea Est”. This means, “God Is My Light”. Very fitting that this sign is illuminated for all to see and be a part of The Catholic University of America.
