This is a continuing series of articles which describe the Cursillo Movement, and an invitation for you to join us.
The Cursillo Method proposes that we discover small groups of friends with whom we can share our lives with. These are known as Friendship Group Reunions, or 4th Day Groups. They can be defined as a group of individuals who are friends because they are Christians, and who wish to be better friends to be better Christians, and be better Christians to be better friends.
These groups are not merely social gatherings for those who have made a 3-day Cursillo Weekend, known as Cursillistas. They are created to be centered in an authentic conversation about the presence of Christ in our personal lives. This is done using the “Tripod Method”, which consists of sharing our Piety, Study, and Action.
Let us begin with Piety, or rather, what it constitutes. In Piety, we share the elements of our life that keep us in spiritual contact with Him. First and foremost, they are the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, but also include Personal Prayer, Meditations, reading Sacred Scripture, Adoration, Examination of Conscience, and Spiritual Direction. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but constitutes the major pillars of Piety, which are aids for growth in our Catholic Christian Life and discerning God’s Will for us.
Friendship Groups are not a recitation of pious acts, nor are they a reporting to one another. They require honesty and vulnerability in the hope of building true Christian Friendship. They strengthen and encourage us to live out our Catholic Faith and become the Good News for others.
For this reason, after the 3-Day weekend, it is crucial for those who attended to discover a friendship group in which they can thrive. Thus, the initial weekend is not an end unto itself, but only the beginning of the Cursillo Way of life. A journey of discovering our true identity in Christ, and his unique calling for each of us.
Next week we will discuss the remaining two legs of the Tripod: Study and Action.
