The diocesan retreat for youth is around the corner and, this year, in the context of the Church’s Jubilee of Hope, we are preparing a spiritual pilgrimage for all teens around the diocese. We will explore the bond between youth and the Church through the most important implication of our faith, such as the sacraments, discipleship, and service. Our goal is to light in their hearts the flame of Hope amid a world that may sometimes be overwhelming. Christ is among us, and this conviction must be handed to the next generation, the generation that the Diocese of Tucson will commission and send to be hope for the world.
Last year, our retreat brought together over 200 teens from 11 cities across southern Arizona. We had the participation of over 40 leaders from different parishes, a testimony that our Church is alive and in good hands. Our theme was “Called to Holiness,” and we sent them home with some important pointers on how to discern their vocation.
The Catholic Church has a long history of creating opportunities for young people to participate and encounter God and the community at large. These opportunities are crucial to help our youth see the scale and impact of our Church among all peoples. In the introduction to the apostolic exhortation on youth, Christus Vivit, Pope Francis reminds us of the many young saints the Church has, and that Jesus himself carried on his mission as a young adult. Celebrations such as Palm Sunday and the Solemnity of Christ the King have historically been led by youth. More recently, the Church has been making history through the World Youth Days which draw thousands of young people from all over the world to a life changing experience as one universal Church.
In 2025, in the context of the Jubilee Year, Rome is offering the Jubilee for teens in April and the Jubilee for young adults in July. Diocesan events are the beginning of young lives being transformed; they are the bridge between the local and the global. Help us spread the word!
