The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (15 September) has special significance for our Diocese, as Padre Eusebio Kino, placed his first mission and his mission field under her Patronage - “Mission Dolorosa” -- in 1687!
Before Padre Kino left Mexico City to begin his 24 years of apostolic labor in our Arizona-Sonora region, the famed Mexican artist, Juan Correa, gifted him with a painting of our Lady of Sorrows, which was the centerpiece of his first Mission. The name of Our Mother of Sorrows Parish in Tucson keeps this beautiful connection with our beginnings alive today. At the base of the large outdoor cross gracing the campus of Our Mother of Sorrows are foundation stones from that first Kino Mission, now in ruins.
Please pray for the Canonization of Padre Kino!
