This year, the World Day of Migrants and Refugees is celebrated on September 26, Catholics worldwide are called upon to remember those displaced and fleeing conflict, violence, human rights abuses, persecution and climate-related disasters. We draw parallels between the migrants caught in this contemporary crisis and what our Holy Family- Mary, Joseph, and Jesus- endured to escape persecution and imminent death, and to find refuge in Egypt. According to the Gospel of Matthew, “Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age.” (Matthew 25:35-43). We heed His Holiness Pope Francis’ message on World Day of Migrants and Refugees to be in solidarity with the sojourner by “welcoming, protecting, promoting and integrating migrants and refugees.” It is our spiritual, moral and humanitarian imperative to put an end to the countless harmful patterns and practices and to build support for protection and aid for migrants seeking asylum.
Join us on Saturday, September 25th at 2:00pm (PST) at the DeConcini port of entry in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and march in solidarity and accompany migrants seeking asylum at the border.
The #SaveAsylum coalition mobilizes migrants, faith-based groups, and over a dozen humanitarian organizations to restore clear and transparent access to asylum. The coalition works to recognize and publicly condemn the US government’s violation of international law as well as the 1980 Refugee Act. A complementary aspect of this public condemnation is lifting up the testimonies of asylum seekers and acknowledging the injustices that they have faced not only in their home country, but as they wait outside the border of a country that had vowed to receive and protect them. The #SaveAsylum coalition has organized nine events since August 2020.
How can you stand in solidarity with asylum seekers? Our border partners have invited faith leaders (both vowed religious and lay) from throughout the U.S. to travel to Nogales, Arizona/Sonora to participate in a migrant-led public action to public action to restore asylum protections on Saturday 25, at 2pm PST, and to consider playing a public role in this action, which may involve accompanying and bearing witness to migrants who wish to present at the port of entry to request asylum.
Organize a public witness in your local community In addition, our partners have asked for people to organize prayerful public witnesses across the country on September 25th and on each Friday throughout the month of October. The hope is that these public witnesses will be prayerful in tone, share the stories of asylum seekers, ideally occur at sites related to the federal government (i.e. federal buildings, courthouses, DHS offices, etc.), and attract local media attention.
