I am very pleased that the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act has been signed into law. Our great Nation must acknowledge not only its great and noble virtues but also its sins and failings. An annual celebration of the formal end to slavery in our Nation will help to prevent the grave evil of slavery from slipping into distant memory. Without losing its focus on the historical end of slavery, I pray that the annual celebration of Juneteenth will also serve as a time for us to recognize the inherent dignity of every human being, created in the image of our God.
