By Elizabeth Bollinger, Executive Director, Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Tucson
In 2020, Gerald Chouinard established the Gerald A. and Patricia A. Chouinard Endowed Fund for Seminarian Education at the Catholic Foundation in memory of his late wife.
As established, the fund provides one-half of its annual distribution for the educational expenses of any Diocese of Tucson sponsored seminary student as selected by the bishop. The remaining one-half is designated for the educational expenses of any Diocese of Tucson seminary student enrolled at Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon, as selected by the bishop or, in the event the Diocese of Tucson has no student enrolled, the one-half share is provided to the Abbey Foundation of Oregon in support of Mount Angel Seminary.
Tuition for one seminarian at Mount Angel Seminary is $46,398 for each of the four years.
Seminarian education was especially important to the Chouinard’s, and Mount Angel Abbey had a special place in Patricia’s heart. Her deep bond with the Benedictine Order was forged from friendships with many of its clergy she met in Arizona.
The monks of Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon form a Benedictine community founded in 1882. They maintain a monastic tradition that has been a part of the Roman Catholic Church for more than 1,500 years.
