Love was in the air as National Marriage Week kicked off February 7th-14th. Towards the end of the week was World Marriage Day on Febraury 13th. The USCCB says World Marriage Day is "an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family." This year's theme is "Called to the Joy of Love."
The Diocese of Tucson joined in on this celebration at it's 2022 Marriage Anniversary Mass. 148 couples from throughout the Diocese registered to join the event. There were couples of all ages; some were newly weds, and others have been married for decades and accompanied by the families they created. Bernard and Mary K Fairbanks couldn't make the mass in person, but they were celebrating a milestone of 68 years of marriage. Three other couples were celebrating 67 years of marriage; Bill and Pat Carter, Filiberto and Rose Felix, and Federick and Judianne Freeman.
Among those celebrating their first year of marriage were Andrew and Isabel Desautels-Moctezuma, Carmen and James Bungert, Gary and Guadalupe Kimble, Anthony Martin and Cecilia de la Osa, Daniel and Marie Smith.
In his homily, Bishop Edward J Weisenburger said to the couples, "You are the homily today."
He said their witness in marriage is a prime example of what love is and that in itself reflects the cross. The way that Christ gave Himself in love on the cross is the way a spouse gives himself/herself in marriage. He said that the paradox is that by giving yourself in love is how you recieve love.
Bishop Weisenburger then gave a special blessing to all the married couples. He had all the couples face one another and say a prayer to each other.
Celebrating marriage can go beyond Marriage Week or your anniversary. It is a constant building and renewing of the vows that takes place in the Sacrament of Marriage.
