Tell us about yourself: Who are you? Where are your from? What’s your new position now? My Name is Rosella Melgoza. I am from Douglas, Arizona. I have lived here for my entire life. My new position will be principal of Loretto Catholic School
What led you to being called to work in Catholic education? I have been Catholic for all my life and have served my parish of St. Luke’s in one capacity or another as a volunteer. I retired from my position as a principal and found after some months I wasn’t ready to be retired. The position at Loretto opened and I am grateful for the opportunity.
What would you like your new staff and students to know about you? Above all, I have tremendous love for Christ and our Blessed Mother. My faith is my moving force.
What are you most excited about for this new school year? I am excited to take part in the Catholic formation of so many young students.
What do you think will be the most challenging part about your new position? I believe that the work of an administrator for a school is very diverse and complex, but everything works out. Praise the Lord. The challenge currently will be the hindrance that COVID brings.
What has given you hope for this new position? My faith more than anything. I believe the Lord acts in very mysterious ways. I am here because he wanted me here. He will guide me to do the best job that I can.
What Catholic devotions do you have that help you with the work that you do? I have a great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to Our Lady of Guadalupe. In my work, I have to have the firmness of a good leader and the tenderness of a good mother. Because my job is not just administering a school, it also involves listening, and caring for student’s and adult’s physical and spiritual needs. Many times, they come to us for orientation or to find some healing. If I pray continuously through my devotions to our Lord and my Blessed Mother they will guide me to what I need to do, what I need to say, or not do or not say.
What piece of advice would you like to give to your fellow colleagues who are also transitioning to a new school leadership position? Being a School leader is a very complex and demanding job. Have high expectations and always move with a plan or a goal in mind. Sometimes, the plan will not go as you wanted but keep a positive outlook and keep moving forward. Don’t let negative energy of others affect your positive outlook and don’t let it discourage you. Always ask questions of others that have a little more experience than you. There is never a dumb question. Last but not least, You as a leader are helping to carve and sculpt the minds of a new generation. Never underestimate the big responsibility that is!!!
