Tell us about yourself: Who are you? Where are you from? What’s your new position now? My name is Shakenya H. Gholson.
Most recently, I was living and working in Washington, D.C.
I am the new school principal of Our Mother of Sorrows.
What led you to being called to work in Catholic education? Service in action! I am called to continue this incredible tradition of faith and education because, as the USCCB reminds us, through education the Church seeks to prepare its members to proclaim the Good News and to translate this proclamation into action. Curriculum, instruction, and supporting others is my faith in action.
What would you like your new staff and students to know about you? I seek to see a world where education is equitable and truly allows each person to maximize their God given potential.
What are you most excited about for this new school year? I am most excited about meeting the students and watching them grow into lifelong learners.
What do you think will be the most challenging part about your new position? Returning to in-person instruction comes with a slew of challenges, namely promoting positive mental health while balancing the need to accelerate students learning to close the gap from learning loss. This will be a year of Grace.
What Catholic devotions do you have that help you with the work that you do? Every day I ask the Queen of Heaven to intercede on our behalf. Life has taught me that one of the best ways to get to the Son is through the Mother. Hail Mary!
What piece of advice would you like to give to your fellow colleagues who are also transitioning to a new school leadership position? I can’t imagine giving anyone advice right now. I am an open and empty vessel trying to soak up as much as possible. I will share a scripture given to me by a colleague,
'Fret not about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God.' - Philippians 4: 6-8
