Logan Moss has been a member of Our Mother of Sorrows (OMOS) Parish and School since he was born. “I love that I have been a part of this community for my whole life,” he said. “I was baptized at OMOS and I will be graduating from OMOS.”
Over the years, Logan noticed that the benches around their courtyard and sports courts had become weathered, damaged, and splintered by the elements and years of contact with children. Last year, he approached OMOS Principal, Shakenya Gholson, with an idea and a proposition. Logan shared his concerns about the benches.
“He asked if he could walk me around the school and show me seating areas that needed to be replaced or refinished,” recalls Gholson. “Logan then presented us with a proposal for his Eagle Scout project whereby he would beautify our school space and install new benches centered around our school's Student Learning Expectations (SLEs). He had an incredible knowledge of wood and outdoor spaces and their upkeep. I was so impressed!”
Logan spent three weekends upgrading the benches with his family and fellow Boy Scouts. Eagle Scout candidates can choose any number of service projects to complete. So, why OMOS? “I chose to replace the benches at OMOS for my Eagle project,” explained Logan, “because by replacing the benches, everyone can now have nice, clean benches to sit on. When we were on the basketball courts, no one wanted to sit on them because they were falling apart before. Now everyone has another place to sit during sports or recess.”
Fellow students appreciated the dedication that Logan has for his school. His hard work has been noticed by younger kids who look up to him as an example.
“The new benches are a symbol for our school,” said fourth-grader, Audrey, “because they have our logo on them and the SLEs. I am not surprised an eighth grader installed them because they are pretty good at doing stuff and are responsible.”
“I like the color,” shared Sienna, who is also in fourth grade. “They make the courtyard pop, and they make me feel grateful to go to OMOS. I like sitting on them during snack time.”
Logan shared, “I am excited and happy to be able to complete my project for other kids to enjoy and utilize. We are all together as a community and a family and I am happy to be leaving something behind for everyone to use and enjoy.”
Eagle Scouts are recognized nationally for their quality of character and strength of values. “To become an Eagle Scout for me means that I live by the Scout Law,” said Logan. “I am trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. People will expect more from you. They will want you to be a leader because you have shown your leadership skills. It means that I worked really hard for a goal and I reached it. It is something that no one can ever take away from me. I will always be an Eagle Scout once I earn my Eagle rank.”
Logan’s contributions made a difference in the community and can inspire other young people to step up and make the world a better place.
