Gospels - June 30: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mark 5:21-43: Today's Gospel tells the story of a little girl who is dying. Jairus, her father, comes to Jesus for help. Before Jesus reaches her, people come to say that she has died. When Jesus reaches the house, He takes her hand, saying, "Little girl, get up." Immediately she stands and begins to walk around.
Do you think Jairus had faith in God? Why? Do you know someone who really trusts Jesus?
ST. PAUL
(5 AD-65 AD)
St. Paul is a great saint of the early church who lived in Jesus' time. After Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, St. Paul greatly persecuted the followers of Jesus. He had a powerful conversion when Jesus appeared to him, asked him why he was persecuting him and called him to follow his teachings in a special way. Even though St. Paul had treated the Christians badly in the past, Jesus gave him a second chance and chose St. Paul to tell the world about him with powerful words and miracles. St. Paul became one of the most important Christians in church history through his letters to the early Christians in the Bible. St. Paul was so changed by his encounter with Christ that he wrote to the Christians, "I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me" (Gal 2:19-20). Paul's preaching and teaching asked Christians to become like Christ and to build up their community by loving one another as Christ loved them.
IN HIS MEMORY:
• Think of some new ways you can imitate Jesus' great love for us with loving words and actions in your community as St. Paul calls us Christians to do.
• Jesus forgave St. Paul for persecuting the Christians, make a special effort to forgive others when they are unkind to you.
• St. Paul wrote encouraging letters to the early Christians. Write an encouraging letter to an elderly friend or relative who might be lonely.
