ADRIAN, MICHIGAN—Sister Maria Caridad Pinuela, baptized Guillerma Pinuela, died on Monday, November 6, 2023, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 86 years of age and in the 67th year of her religious profession: 17 years as a Dominican Sister of Molo, Iloilo City, Philippines, and in her 50th year in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister Maria Caridad was born in Zarraga, Iloilo, Philippines, to Juan and Mercedes (Sendino) Pinuela. Sister graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Zarraga and received a Bachelor of Education degree in history from San Agustin University in Iloilo City and a Master of Arts degree in educational administration from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian.
Sister spent three years ministering in education in the Philippines and 10 years at schools in Detroit, Michigan; Douglas, Arizona; Aiea, Hawaii, where she was principal of St. Elizabeth School for seven years; and Oakland, California, all prior to entering the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Her ministries as an Adrian Dominican Sister were in schools in Oakland and Hayward, California. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2002.
Sister Maria Caridad was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Flocerfida Pedroso and a brother, Wilfredo Pinuela. She is survived by her brother, Rogelio Pinuela of Zarraga, Iloilo, Philippines, other loving family members and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.
Visitation will be held from 6:30-7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, in the Gathering Space of St. Catherine Chapel. The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 pm Wednesday, November 8, 2023, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 am Thursday, November 9, 2023. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Congregation Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI, 49221.
