Sr. Carole Ruland, MHSH, went home to God on January 4, 2024, at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium, Maryland. She was 83 years old and had been a member of the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart for 64 years.
Born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, her early ministries in religious education took her to parishes and dioceses in six states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. Army bases in Germany.
In 1988 she was called to the Santa Catalina Mission in Tucson, Arizona. With just 180 families, the mission had no priest—just a Pastoral Administrator, Sr. Carole. Under her administration the small mission flourished, and when she left in 2008 it had become a parish with 1,250 families and a new church building.
In 2009 she became Chaplain and Spiritual Counselor at the Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson. She said it was an opportunity to “walk with people as they walked through the door into heaven.” She served there for 10 years, returning to Baltimore in 2019 to assist in the management of Mission Helper Center.
Sr. Carole had a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Notre Dame University of Maryland and a master’s degree in Religious Education from the University of Detroit.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Pat Ruland; her sister-in-law Dee Ruland; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass Wednesday, January 10 at 11 a.m.; viewing at 10; Stella Maris Chapel, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road, Timonium, Maryland, 21093.
Donations in memory of Sr. Carole may be directed to the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart, 16 Greenmeadow Drive, Timonium, Maryland.
