Have you thanked your priest lately? On Sunday, September 29, we celebrate Priesthood Sunday, a day to show priests our appreciation for their service to the Church. The Diocese of Tucson asks that you consider ways you and your family can say thank you to our many priests serving Southern Arizona.
Our diocese is fortunate to have more than 170 priests currently serving the 77 parishes and 34 missions in our nine counties. As you can imagine, thousands of Masses are celebrated every month, publicly or privately, by our priests. Without them, celebrating Mass our Catholic community would not exist. It’s that simple. We need priests now and in the future.
Last year, our diocese was blessed to have five young men ordained as priests. The celebration was memorable and beautiful, but it won’t happen again for several years because, on average, it takes five to eight years for a man to become a priest. This year, our diocese was fortunate to have four men begin seminary. The reality is that every year, priests retire or leave the diocese for other reasons, so we need to nurture and grow the priests that we do have.
Small gestures make a big difference. As we inch closer toward Priesthood Sunday, consider how you and your family can show appreciation to the men who serve our diocese. You can also visit vocationministry.com for more information.
