Abortion was first legalized in the United States some 50 years ago, since then Reachout Women’s Center in Tucson has been serving pregnant women in need. In an effort to provide women with alternatives to abortion, Reachout offers underserved families free services that include pregnancy testing, clothing and material assistance, non-judgmental counseling, referrals, and limited obstetrical ultrasounds to measure the baby’s heartbeat and to estimate gestational age. Reachout walks with parents facing unexpected pregnancies to educate them on all options, including adoption and support with parenting.
Ultrasounds can change the minds of women considering abortion by changing their hearts. For a mother, seeing her own baby move in her womb is a transforming experience. Mothers who visit Reachout receive printed photos of their baby.
Reachout’s mission is to “help women choose life for their unborn child by lovingly supporting them emotionally, physically, and spiritually.”
Each year, Reachout walks with more than a thousand families each year. Since its inception in 1973, Reachout estimates it has saved about 3,350 lives of children whose mothers were previously abortion minded. “Not every woman in need of our services is abortion determined,” explained RJ Saavedra, Executive Director of Reachout Women’s Center. “We currently serve an average of five to seven abortion determined women per month.”
In celebration of 50 years of compassionate ministry, the staff, volunteers, and supporters of Reachout Women’s Center gathered for a special Mass with Bishop Edward Weisenburger at St. Augustine Cathedral. This Mass took place on September 29, the Feast of the Archangels. In his homily, Bishop Weisenburger shared, “Our response to the angel’s message is critical. You at Reachout are those who respond to the needs of the Church. In responding, you are helping to further the Kingdom. How badly we need that today! People who respond to angels become saints. That’s our calling.” The impact of Reachout Women’s Center cannot be fully expressed. Each life that is saved has untold potential to shape the world and is most certainly beloved by his or her Creator God.
The community continued celebrating Reachout’s 50-year legacy at a breakfast sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Arizona state council. The following day was a successful golf tournament which raised $6,940 that will be used to purchase diapers and wipes. The golf tournament was coordinated by St. Mark the Evangelist Parish and Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Rosary Council. These signature events were intended to build community and raise awareness of the work done at Reachout Women’s Center.
Saavedra expressed her immense gratitude to “all past and present volunteers, board members, and most especially the founders, for 50 years of life-affirming service to moms and babies. It is an honor and privilege to be a part of a ministry that helps save lives.”
Volunteers are always welcome to get involved in the life-saving work of Reachout Women’s Center. During Respect Life Month and beyond, continue to pray for all pregnant women facing uncertain circumstances.
