As part of our Lenten practices to reconnect and draw nearer to Christ during the most solemn week of the liturgical year, the eighth-grade students at St. Ambrose Catholic School presented the Living Stations of the Cross to parents, students and staff. Their goals were not only to learn more about the importance of each Station, but also to help their school community more fully embrace Holy Week reflecting on the lifesaving sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ.
They spent about a month preparing for the event in addition to looking more closely at each of these special moments in Christ’s final hours on earth. They began with their own questions and analyzed the ways each of us is responsible in today’s world for nailing Jesus to the Cross. Not only did they study the Stations, but they also watched “The Passion of the Christ” in order to more deeply reflect upon how God the Father put people on Christ’s path to Calvary who showed love, compassion, and faithfulness as followers to the Truth as well as seeing how those qualities and Christ’s presence led to the conversion of Simon and the Roman soldier.
As the school community participated in the Stations, they heard a description of the Station, listened to a reflection relating the Station to our current earthly habits, and finally a prayer asking God to help us be more attentive to turning away from sin and turning our lives around to be true, faithful, and most importantly to actively be Christ to one another in our daily lives, following the One True God.
