Bishop Edward Weisenburger sends out an introduction message to the synodal journey initiated by Pope Francis:
"Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In April of 2021, Pope Francis initiated a synodal journey of the whole People of God, to begin in October 2021 in each diocese throughout the world. The process will culminate in October 2023 in the Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in Rome. The theme of the synod is: “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission.” Reflecting on the meaning of synodality, Pope Francis has stated that synodality “is a style, it is a walk together and it is what the Lord expects from the Church of the Third Millennium” (November 29, 2019). Although synodality is not a new dynamic in the life of the Church, we will all, no doubt, become more familiar with a fuller meaning of synodality in the coming weeks and months.
In 2018, the International Theological Commission defined synodality as “the action of the Spirit in the communion of the Body of Christ and in the missionary journey of the People of God.” This is a process of discernment, with the aid of Holy Spirit, involving bishops, priests, religious women and men, and lay Catholics, each according to the gifts and charism of their vocation. This is an exciting time for the Church, including the Diocese of Tucson.
The synodal process for the Diocese of Tucson will open with a special Mass at the Cathedral of St. Augustine on October 17. In the weeks and months that follow, our diocese will join with dioceses throughout the world in hosting listening sessions for various communities and special groups, focusing on this important topic. More information will be shared with diocesan leaders, pastors, and parish leaders in the coming weeks. This is an invaluable opportunity to all the Catholics of our diocese to share their input and reflections as we humbly learn together how we—as the People of God—build up our communion with one another and carry out our mission in the world.
