This is a continuing series of articles that discuss the Cursillo Movement and its Methodology, and an invitation for you to join us.
As we discussed last week, small Friendship Groups are an integral part of the Cursillo Movement. They consist of a gathering of Christian Friends, who meet weekly to have an “authentic conversation” about the presence of Christ in their lives. We accomplish this using the “Tripod Method” of sharing our Piety, Study and Action. This week we discuss the remaining two legs of the Tripod: Study and Action.
Study: We are either growing closer to or further from God, there is no standing still. This demands that we develop a deeper knowledge of the gift of God and his Church. Therefore in our Friendship Groups we share what we have done to grow in our understanding of this gift through our study of scripture, spiritual books, podcasts, lectures, a homily, or what we have learned through life experiences. This includes increasing our understanding of Church Doctrine and the Catechism. This is not growing in knowledge for the sake of knowledge, but to help us in transforming our lives to be more like that of Christ. We learn in order to love better, become better Christians, and better friends.
Action: James 2:26 reminds us, “Faith without Works is Dead”. So what works give witness to our faith? The Church gives us a template using the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, which are based on the teachings of Christ. They are actions we can perform to extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. Whatever the work, we do it for love of God, for even non-believers can perform good acts. God probes our hearts and knows the purity of our intentions.
In our Friendship Groups, we share what actions we have taken that support our faith in God and demonstrate his love for us. Just as with Christ, our sole purpose is to do the work of our Heavenly Father. At our judgement we long to hear the words “Well done my good and faithful servant”.
Next week we will hear a personal example of how someone applies the “Tripod” of Piety, Study and Action in their own life.
