The Kino Border Initiative and caring for the least of Christ's people

I wanted to provide a brief update on what is happening at the Kino Border Initiative:

• We have formed a staff committee which is meeting regularly to focus our efforts in response to COVID-19.  Different areas such as the dining area, the shelters, our volunteer program, education (to name some examples) are working on activities to help us open and expand our programming at the right time. We also intend to combine this input into a phased plan for opening various parts of our operation. At the moment, we continue with our system of providing food to go along with other needed items once a day (e.g., milk, laundry detergent).
• We continue to participate in the Save Asylum campaign and have been working with and accompanying migrants in monthly actions at the border.  In a number of ways, the migrants have led these efforts and it has helped increase their visibility while they pressure the U.S. government to allow them to make their asylum claim.  We have been using technology that allows people to participate virtually and partnered most recently with Catholic Extension in this effort. 
• As of the end of September, we had served 94,631 meals, had led 21 educational immersion experiences and had offered 61 presentations. 
• We are working with an organization called Save the Children which will install and supervise a play area for migrant children. 
• A work plan group is meeting monthly to help us follow through on the strategic plan and to raise awareness among different staff members about each person's respective activities. 

Finally, the KBI Board of Directors is voting on the search firm for the executive director search.  Please send in your vote via email if you have not done so.
